Useful Fillers in French to Sound More Natural When You Speak

March 27, 2026

Fillers are the small words and phrases speakers use to pause, think, or keep the conversation going without going completely silent. In French, using the right fillers makes your speech sound much more natural, even at beginner level.

What are fillers?

In English, you use “um”, “well”, “you know”, “I mean”, “actually”. French has its own set of equivalents. Learning them is not about sounding lazy — it is about sounding human.

The most common French fillers

  • euh = um, uh (the most basic pause filler)
  • ben / bah = well, so (very common in spoken French)
  • bon = well, okay (to move on or wrap up)
  • eh bien = well then (slightly more formal)
  • donc = so (used to resume or conclude)
  • alors = so, well then
  • voilà = there you go, that’s it
  • enfin = well, I mean, finally
  • tu vois = you know, you see
  • quoi = kind of, right (added at end of sentence)
  • hein ? = right? huh? (seeking confirmation)
  • c’est-à-dire = that is to say, I mean

Examples in context

  • Euh… je ne sais pas trop. = Um, I’m not really sure.
  • Bon, on y va ? = Well, shall we go?
  • Alors, qu’est-ce que tu penses ? = So, what do you think?
  • C’est bien, quoi. = It’s good, you know.
  • Enfin, c’est mon avis. = I mean, that’s just my opinion.
  • Tu vois ce que je veux dire ? = You see what I mean?
  • C’est ça, voilà. = That’s it, exactly.

Regional and generational differences

  • genre = like (used heavily by younger speakers, similar to “like” in casual English)
  • du coup = so, as a result (very trendy filler in contemporary spoken French)
  • bref = anyway, in short (used to cut a long explanation short)

What to avoid

Using too many fillers or the same one repeatedly can make speech feel monotonous. Balance them with forward movement in the conversation. Also avoid translating English fillers directly — saying “you know” in French does not mean what it means in English.

Final tip

Start with just two or three: euh, bon, and alors. Use them whenever you need a moment to think. You will notice how natural they feel in actual conversation almost immediately.
