Shopping in French: Useful Vocabulary and Phrases for Stores and Markets

Shopping is one of the easiest real-life situations to practice in French because the language is repetitive, useful, and full of ready-made phrases. You ask for an item, a size, a price, or a payment method, and the same patterns come back again and again.

Useful shopping words in French

  • un magasin = a shop
  • un marche = a market
  • un prix = a price
  • une taille = a size
  • une caisse = a checkout
  • un ticket = a receipt
  • une carte = a card
  • de l’argent liquide = cash

The most useful shopping phrases

  • Bonjour, je cherche… = Hello, I am looking for…
  • Combien ca coute ? = How much does it cost?
  • Vous avez une autre taille ? = Do you have another size?
  • Je peux essayer ? = Can I try it on?
  • Je vais prendre ca. = I will take this.
  • Je paie par carte. = I am paying by card.

At a clothing store

Mini dialogue
A: Bonjour, je cherche une veste noire.
B: Oui, bien sur. Quelle taille ?
A: Vous avez une taille M ?
B: Oui. Vous pouvez l’essayer.

At an open-air market

  • Je voudrais un kilo de tomates.
  • Je prends aussi des pommes.
  • C’est tout, merci.

Politeness matters

Start with bonjour, add s’il vous plait, and finish with merci. Even simple French sounds much better when it is polite.

Final tip

Do not memorize shopping words alone. Practice them inside full phrases. That is what helps you use them in real life.
