Etre means “to be”. It is one of the most used and most irregular verbs in French. You need it to describe people, talk about location, express feelings, and form past tenses.
Present tense of etre
- je suis = I am
- tu es = you are
- il / elle est = he / she is
- nous sommes = we are
- vous etes = you are
- ils / elles sont = they are
Describing people
- Je suis etudiant. = I am a student.
- Elle est medecin. = She is a doctor.
- Il est grand et sympa. = He is tall and nice.
Saying where you are
- Je suis a Paris. = I am in Paris.
- Nous sommes a la maison. = We are at home.
- Elle est au bureau. = She is at the office.

C’est and ce sont
C’est is one of the most used expressions in everyday French. It means “it is”, “this is”, or “that is”.
