Etre means “to be”. It is one of the most used and most irregular verbs in French. You need it to describe people, talk about location, express feelings, and form past tenses.

Present tense of etre

  • je suis = I am
  • tu es = you are
  • il / elle est = he / she is
  • nous sommes = we are
  • vous etes = you are
  • ils / elles sont = they are

Describing people

  • Je suis etudiant. = I am a student.

Negative form

  • Je ne suis pas fatigue. = I am not tired.
