Parce Que, Donc, Mais, Puis: Linking Words That Make Your French Better

Linking words connect your ideas and make your French sound like real sentences rather than a list of isolated words. Learning just a handful of them immediately improves both your speaking and writing.

Coordinating conjunctions: connecting equal parts

• et = and → J’aime le cafe et le chocolat.
• mais = but → Je veux venir, mais je suis fatigue.
• ou = or → Tu veux du the ou du cafe ?
• donc = so, therefore → Il pleut, donc je reste a la maison.
• car = because, for (more formal than parce que) → Je sors car j’ai besoin d’air.
• or = now, yet (used in written French for a contrast) → less common in speech
• ni = nor → Je n’ai ni faim ni soif.

Subordinating conjunctions: linking a main and dependent clause

• parce que = because → Je suis en retard parce que le bus est arrive tard.
• quand = when → J’appelle quand j’arrive.

• par contre / en revanche = on the other hand → C’est long, par contre c’est efficace.
• pourtant = yet, however → Je comprends, pourtant je ne suis pas d’accord.

Final tip

Start with et, mais, parce que, donc and puis. These five words alone will transform your sentences. Once they are automatic, add the others gradually through reading and listening to natural French.
