French Colors

Colors are among the first vocabulary topics every French learner should master. You hear them in daily conversation, use them when shopping, and need them to describe clothes, food, objects, and places.

Common colors in French

  • red = rouge
  • blue = bleu
  • green = vert
  • yellow = jaune
  • white = blanc
  • black = noir
  • pink = rose
  • orange = orange
  • gray = gris
  • brown = marron

How to use colors in a sentence

In French, colors usually come after the noun they describe. For example, une voiture rouge means a red car, and un sac noir means a black bag.

  • J’aime la robe bleue. = I like the blue dress.
  • Le ciel est gris aujourd’hui. = The sky is gray today.
  • Nous avons une maison blanche. = We have a white house.

Important note about agreement

Many French colors change form to match masculine, feminine, singular, or plural nouns. For example, blanc becomes blanche in the feminine form, and vert becomes verte. Some color words, such as orange and marron, often stay the same.

Translate these into French:

  2. a white table
  3. two red apples

Study tip

Try learning colors with real objects around you. Point to items in your room and name their color aloud in French. This makes the vocabulary more memorable and practical.
